Clean Seas campaign

In the framework of the Clean Seas Campaign of the UN Environment Programme, Enaleia in collaboration with the Port Secretariat of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy implemented actions in 8 locations throughout Greece to clean ports and land port areas from marine litter.

Specifically, groups of divers dived into the waters of the ports, retrieving plastic and other materials from the seabed, while volunteers cleaned the areas and beaches near the ports.

In just 4 days, Enaleia, fishers and volunteers managed to collect over 14.155 Kg of Marine plastic!

The biggest portion of the collected marine plastic has been integrated into the circular economy in collaboration with certified recycling partners.

Journey to Ithaca

In 2012, an aquaculture was abandoned in Ithaca, degrading the natural environment, neglecting fish farming cages and other equipment, leaving them exposed and susceptible to weather conditions.

Healthy Seas, Enaleia, Ghost Diving, and other organisations came together for a Journey to Ithaca, cleaning up the most polluted areas and restoring the natural ecosystem that resulted in 76.000 Kg of marine litter!

In 2022 we came back to the island to finish the work we started last year, removing 23.500 Kg of marine litter!

From March to June Enaleia, with its Mediterranean CleanUp, incentivised the fishers of Ithaca to limit their regular activity and instead collect marine plastic from remote coastlines. An action that promoted marine ecosystem restoration and helped the regeneration and breeding of fish.

The recovered fishing nets will be regenerated by Aquafil, together with other nylon waste, into ECONYL® yarn, the basis for new sustainable products. In the framework of Enaleia’s Mediterranean Cleanup Project, the rest of the collected marine plastics will also be integrated into the circular economy.

The project was organized under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy.
