Supporting collaboration, empowering fishers

Our educational projects provide information, knowledge, products and expertise to provide the fishers with the right tools to fish less but earn a higher income.

People think we are destroying the sea but ignore that we lack the required information. We love the sea, we respect it, and we listen to her.

Fish Smarter
Our solution in the effort to reduce overfishing

Fish stocks in the Mediterranean have dropped dramatically due to overfishing, which is one of the biggest threats our seas are facing today

Prevention of “breaking” of traditional fishing boats

EU PROJECTS
Enaleia participates in European-funded projects, with links to open and upcoming calls that support research and innovation

Being a fisher today is different than 10 or 20 years ago. The job has changed due to increasing costs, more regulations, farmed fish products on the market and a higher demand for responsible and sustainable fish products. To continue to successfully operate in a changing society and the changing fishing sector, competencies of those working in the sector need to evolve and grow. The next step is to conduct country-specific training in seven countries and outermost regions: France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Spain and the Azores. This will generate important experiences and input to work towards the development of an EU-course standard for sustainable fisheries training.

Catching the potential’s ultimate goal is to develop a European standard for sustainable fisheries training, which is consistent but also offers sufficient room for adaptation to the local/regional circumstances in which fishers (will) operate. Moreover, the project aims at developing a strategy to implement that standard internationally as effective as possible (EU, IMO, FAO).

Enaleia, being one of the 10 Catching-the-Potential Partners of the consortium, will develop and conduct country-specific training addressed to the needs of the local fishing communities with the aim to educate them on sustainable fishing and build green skills capacities. The feedback gained from this training will provide useful insights into the development of a European standard for sustainable fisheries training.

The main objective of CHERISH is to improve regional development policies to protect and promote cultural heritage in fishing communities in order to boost attractiveness of these regions for businesses, citizens and tourists.

Enaleia, in the framework of CHERISH Interreg Europe and in collaboration with the Municipality of Kavala, aims to educate local fishing communities on applied good practices in marine ecology, fisheries management, and the cooperation actions between fishers and fishing areas. Specifically, the 8th Regional Stakeholder Group Meeting in Kavala on May 2021 aimed to deepen the knowledge of the good practices shared in the previous months and the exchange of knowledge between different stakeholders who are active in fisheries but come from various sectors of public, private and academic spaces.

Green to Blue (Erasmus+ Project)

The main objective of the Green to Blue Project is to provide sector workers and sector stakeholders with an effective and functional training program in order to improve the environmental management system and develop technical skills strongly centred on the sustainability of activities related to the sea.

Enaleia, being one of the 7 Green-to-Blue Partners of the consortium, will contribute to the development of training packages addressed to fishing communities, fish farmers and fishing associations, facilitating in such a way the development of skills related to the concept of sustainability and the blue economy.

The LIFE DREAM “Deep REef restoration and litter removal in the Mediterranean Sea” is a translational Project aiming at mitigating the anthropic pressure on deep, sensitive habitats (DR) and promoting their protection, recovery, and preservation, with the focus on 4 Projects Areas (PAs) across the Mediterranean Sea. The results of LIFE DREAM would represent the baseline to extend the Natura 2000 network to the deep Mediterranean Sea and to restore deep, sensitive habitats by providing best practices for DR restoration and the related costs and benefits.

Enaleia, being one of the 14 partners from Greece, Italy, and Spain will utilise its expanded network of fishing communities to engage them in fishing for litter, prevention and circular economy activities in the Greek Project Areas, as well as participate in the conduction of surveys regarding the impact of the project on the local communities and stakeholders. It will also participate in raise-awareness and dissemination activities to maximise the project’s impact on a transnational scale.
