Fishing For Litter

Enaleia’s “Fishing For Litter” actions are carried out by medium-scale and small-scale fishers passively, which means during their normal fishing activities without financial compensation but a symbolic reward for participating in the activity.

Marine litter removal initiatives undertaken by fishers during their regular fishing activity can be considered the most efficient. Fishing vessels are given free bags to collect any marine litter they catch in their nets during fishing operations and are provided with free disposal facilities in the harbour.

All types of marine litter are targeted depending on the gear type used. Most amounts are from seafloor litter collected with bottom-contacting gear. Full bags are deposited on the quayside, where the participating harbours monitor the waste before moving the bag to a dedicated skip, open-top, or press container for disposal.

Clean-up missions alongside coastal fishers

Between April and July, Enaleia, with its Mediterranean CleanUp project, is spearheading “Fishing for Litter” with the aim of cleaning secluded coastal areas and land port areas from marine litter.

During this period, local fishers are mobilised to limit their regular activity and instead collect marine plastic from remote coastlines, helping the breeding and reproduction of fish.

Educational activities addressing professional fishers

In the framework of EU-funded projects and Enaleia’s training programmes, we aim to educate local fishing communities on applied good practices in sustainable fishing techniques, marine ecology, fisheries management, and the cooperation actions between fishers and fishing areas.
