Together With The Fishers towards the plastic-free Mediterranean Sea

We envision that every single fisher will become part of the solution
We envision empowering the fishing communities to fish sustainably and collect plastic from the sea
We envision a sustainable marine ecosystem, including humans

1.500+ fishers from Greece and Italy

900.000+ Kg of marine plastic collected

58%+ integrated into the circular economy

"An estimated 200.000 tonnes of plastic is leaking into the Mediterranean sea every year, equivalent to over 500 shipping containers each day"
"22 countries and territories comprising the Mediterranean Region produce 10% of all plastic goods, making it the world’s 4th largest producer"
"The Mediterranean is polluted by an estimated 730 tonnes of plastic waste every day. Plastics account for between 95 to 100% of total floating litter, and more than 50% of seabed litter"
"Lost or otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (LDFG) makes up the majority of large plastic pollution in the oceans."
"Unless significant measures are taken to address mismanaged waste, the main source of the leakage, this will at least double by 2040."

OUR SOLUTION FOR CLEANER SEAS
Education. Prevention. Mitigation. Recycle & Upcycle.

Education

On the path to minimise plastic pollution

We work with the fishing communities in the Mediterranean, mobilising them on sustainable fishing practices and incentivising them to bring their plastic bycatches back to the port.

Prevention

We want to ‘cure’ the planet, but we must first focus on preventing harm to the environment

Lost or otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (LDFG) makes up the majority of large plastic pollution in the oceans. To prevent further marine plastic pollution, we collect the used fishing nets and other LDFG that otherwise would end up in the sea or landfill. The fishers hand over their LDFG, to the Port Coordinator of Enaleia, who places them in our special storage equipment placed at every port to be upcycled.

Mitigation

Fishers on the frontline of the marine plastic pollution crisis

The fishers don’t collect only fish but also plastic, which they previously used to throw back into the sea. This is why we mobilise the fishers to bring back their plastic bycatches. Mainly between October and May, we incentivise the fishers to bring their plastic bycatches back to port, collecting the equivalent of more than 2 trucks of plastic daily.

In addition, between March and June, we are spearheading our actions by incentivising coastal fishers to limit their regular activity and instead collect marine plastic from remote coastlines, helping the breeding and reproduction of fish.

Circular Economy

Transforming ocean plastic into treasure

Transparency. Blockchain technology. Recycle & Upcycle.

By working together, we can deliver long-lasting, sustainable change. Thanks to our circular economy partners, the collected marine litter is managed, and the biggest portion of it is integrated into the circular economy.

We #BeatPlasticPollution by raising awareness

In order to awaken awareness about marine plastic pollution, we organise educational activities and beach and port clean-ups, with the participation of local volunteers, schools, international organisations, volunteer divers, and employees.

An award-winning approach

With the project “Mediterranean CleanUp,” the Co-founder and Director of Enaleia, Lefteris Arapakis, has been bestowed the honorary title of “Ambassador for the Mediterranean coast” for 2021-22 and has been named as “Young Champion of the Earth“ for 2020 by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

The “Mediterranean CleanUp” operates under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Hellenic Ministry of Environment & Energy. Enaleia has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
